October 07, 1928.  "How many jars of MOX are sold daily?  10 Miles to MOX LABORATORIES of CANADA."  Add-Up the numbers in this newspaper ad and see just how many jars of the wonder ointment were sold each day.  Is there still a MOX Laboratory in Canada?  From a Winnipeg newspaper.

Chief Add 'Em-Up

October 16, 1928.  "Secure Correct or Nearest Correct Total of Numbers Above to Win La Salle Car.  The problem is to add together all of the numbers shown above.  Each figure is clearly indicated, and they run from two to nine; the sixes have a curved stem; the nines a straight stem; all are single numbers, there are no combinations; add them as if each figure stood one above the other in a single column.  Every figure in the picture is complete.  If in doubt about any of the Figures, send in the chart with a figure marked, to the contest department, who will gladly tell you what it is."  The Add 'Em Up contests have been my favorite contests to appear in newspapers so far.  This is a really nice example.

Beast of the "LOST WORLD"

 July 31, 1925.  Winners of this Add The Numbers contest received tickets to see the motion picture, THE LOST WORLD.  The movie starred Bessie Love, Wallace Beery, Lewis Stone and Lloyd Hughes.  This silent film version of A. Conan Doyle's adventure story was directed by Harry Hoyt.  There were five pictures for this contest but I have only been able to find these two, which are Picture No. 4 and Picture No. 5.

Add all the numbers together and find out how many feathers are on a rooster. - This newspaper contest appeared in papers in January of 1955.

The PROBLEM, 1913

" The PROBLEM is to ascertain the total of the figures in the puzzle chart. Just add 'em up. The figures run from one to nine. There are no double figures, and no characters which are not figures." This adding contest appeared in newspapers in May of 1913. I get a headache just thinking about adding up these numbers.

Just in case you do not have enough to do this holiday seasaon. I really do like the creativity of the Ad Em' Up contests. Santa appeared in several newspapers in the late 1920's - this one is from 1929.

Win A New 1938 PHILCO Radio

This newspaper contest was to promote the New 1938 Automatic Tuning PHILCO Radio. The dress worn by the lady in the above picture was composed entirely of numerals. The contest was to add together all the numerals in her dress - numbers 1 to 9 - and submit the total.
